Antique Chinese Brass Repousse Bowl
Something really rather special...........
We've done the best we can on the description for this one - bearing in mind that our Chinese translations might not be perfect...........
The bowl is a stunner, very skillfully worked and obviously telling some kind of story
It would appear to be the story of a wedding, or courtship, and may have been made as a wedding gift.
The panels are each approximately 9cm x 5.25cm and each tells part of a story.
It starts with the first panel, showing a young man petitioning a senior gent, with a request (we think) to marry at the senior court of the province.
It is clear that thee younger figure is expaing or request something of the senior figure, and that the occasion is of importance
The second panel shows the younger man in battle with a senior man, presumably to enforce his wishes - an elopement or marriage against the wishes of a family maybe ?
The third panel shows the two (we think) lovers by the side of a road, the young man is asking the young woman to go with him to the west and (we think) marry him T
The sign on the road reads as a rough translation hsi K'o - hsi being the west, and K'o can mean consent.......
The fourth panel shows the young couple at a temple presumably having their marriage blessed or solemnised by a senior gent - the sign above the alter reads, we think, Golden Mountain Temple.
The last panel shows the (presumably) happily married couple standing to each side of a shield which is blank - presumably to have the family name engraved in it.
The bowl stands about 4.5 inches or 11.5cm tall and the top diameter is about 7.5 inches or 19cm
The bowl has been in the family for years - certainly it came to this country prior to 1900, though it may be considerably older, and it is a real beauty
It is in good condition, we've given it a bit of a clean to show the panels clearly, but left the base and interior as was.
It has a tiny bit of damage to the underside of the bowl where it meets the foot rim - photographed at photo's 11 and 12, but not visible on normal display.
It could, I think, but properly repaired easily enough - the brass is intact, just with a little slit in it.
It is a grand piece, I've never seen another quite like it, and would assume that it was made for a particular occasion.
